The military is using acupuncture to relieve pain and stress.

Acupuncture can treat both acute and chronic pain, obesity through appetite suppression, tobacco addiction, anxiety disorders, hormonal disorders such as menopausal symptoms, allergy and sinus problems, rashes and can promote overall well-being, Hanley said.

“There are multiple types of acupuncture,” Hanley said. “In addition to the meridian system that most people think of with points all over the body, there is also Chinese scalp acupuncture were needles are threaded just under the surface of the scalp to stimulate regions or stripes to effect pain, motor function, hearing, vision, balance and any number of issues.

Acupuncture can help you stamp out stress and brings back your inner energy.

Two members of the 386th Expeditionary Medical Group visited the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing to give an idea of one way to manage stress: acupuncture.

“Acupuncture, in western medicine, is considered an alternative or complimentary medicine,” said Col. Christian Hanley, 386th Expeditionary Medical Group medical acupuncturist. “Acupuncture uses a single or series of needles to stimulate points along energy flow channels or meridians.”

Hanely, who is deployed from the Pentagon, explained that the needles can be used with or without stimulation. The stimulation can be in the form of manipulation, electrical stimulation, heat from sources or an electrical infrared heat source or cold.

We all live with stress. It’s how well we manage it that matters most. To help you cope, maybe you’ve tried exercise, yoga, meditation or changing your diet. But have you ever considered acupuncture?

A type of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is based on the premise that health and well-being depend on the strength, vitality and free-flowing of qi, or vital energy, throughout the body. The qi flows along well-documented paths or meridians. Health concerns and pain arise when blockages or imbalances occur.

Tai Chi can help to relieve stress and enhance your lifestyle.

Doctor Youzhong Wu’s life revolves around healing – whether in his capacity as a man of medicine or his role as Tai Chi master.

“Healing yourself is the best form of healing,” he says while preparing to deliver his latest class at Derry’s Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin.

He may be a qualified doctor of medicine and a traditional Chinese medical practitioner but Master Youzhong insists that harmonious inner healing – both emotional and physical – can best be achieved over time through the practice of the martial art of Tai Chi Chuan and the Chinese philosophy of Qigong.

Tai Chi Chuan has boomed in popularity in the West in recent decades and there are many interpretations of the martial art. There are those who cover the full curriculum of the art which can even include the use of weapons. However, there are also those who are predominately interested in developing the health aspects of Tai Chi and Master Youzhong’s Derry class falls into this category. His teaching concentrates a lot on the hand form, Qigong exercises and meditation.

There are many different causes of stress which are primarily related to a situation or event and how a person deals or responds to that situation. The signs of stress can therefore differ from one person to the next and may manifest in the form of conditions such as IBS, anxiety, migraines, insomnia, reduced immunity, depression, back pain and fatigue.

Those suffering from stress symptoms use a number of coping mechanisms with many people finding traditional acupuncture effective in not only helping to relieve symptoms but to also identify and treat the root cause of stress.
