Green tea can be used as a remedy for prostate cancer, according to scientists.

Green tea has been known for offering a wide array of health benefits and recently a clinical study has shown that green tea can work as a remedy for prostate cancer. Green tea has a compound known as Polyphenon-E, which is known to be responsible for its anti-cancer effects. The study has found that consuming 12 cups of concentrated green tea has the ability of reducing the biomarkers’ serum echelons by around 30 percent; the serum echelons indicate prostate cancer’s prognosis. The biomarkers involved in this cancer type are: VGEF, PSA and HGF.

Acupuncture can help relieve hot flashes from prostate cancer treatment, which will benefit a lot of people.

Acupuncture provides long-lasting relief to hot flashes, heart palpitations and anxiety due to side effects of the hormone given to counteract testosterone, the hormone that induces prostate cancer, according to a study published in the April issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, an official journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

The main treatments for men with metastatic prostate cancer are either surgery or hormone therapy to significantly reduce the level of testosterone in the body. Eliminating testosterone has been proven to keep the cancer in check by starving the cancer of hormones it needs to grow and spread. However, about half of the time, this therapy also causes very uncomfortable hot flashes similar to those women experience during menopause. The main way to combat hot flashes is to take antidepressants, but these drugs can cause side effects of their own, including nausea, dry mouth, sleeplessness, altered appetite and sexual changes.

Green Tea can help stem the tide of prostate cancer, a recent study has found.

Green tea appears to inhibit the spread of prostate cancer in a number of ways, says a study in the Dec. 1 issue of Cancer Research.

In research with mice, scientists from the University of Wisconsin and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland found green tea polyphenols (GTP) target molecular pathways that control the proliferation and spread of prostate tumor cells. The polyphenols also inhibit the growth of blood vessels that feed prostate tumors.

Red wine and green tea are not only tasty beverages, a recent study suggests they can be effective in preventing prostate cancer.

Researchers have explained how antioxidants in red wine and green tea produce a combined effect to disrupt an important cell signaling pathway necessary for prostate cancer growth.

The finding is important because it may lead to the development of drugs that could stop or slow cancer progression, or improve current treatments.

“Not only does SphK1/S1P signaling pathway play a role in prostate cancer, but it also plays a role in other cancers, such as colon cancer, breast cancer, and gastric cancers,” said Dr. Gerald Weissmann, editor-in-chief of The FASEB Journal .

Yet another benefit of drinking green tea regularly; it could delay the onset of prostate cancer.

Active compounds in green tea may slow down the progression of prostate cancer, researchers reported on Friday.

Capsules made using green tea extracts called polyphenols lowered levels of proteins that tumors use to grow, the researchers found.

Made by Polyphenon Pharma, the capsules called Polyphenon E contain epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, a green tea extract that has antioxidant properties.

Jim Cardelli of Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and colleagues tested 26 prostate cancer patients, aged from 41 to 68.

Each took four Polyphenon E capsules a day — equivalent to drinking 12 cups of green tea — for about a month before they had their prostates removed.

Blood tests showed levels of three proteins associated with the growth and spread of prostate cancer fell. Hepatocyte growth factor or HGF fell 18.9 percent on average, vascular endothelial growth factor or VEGF fell by 9.9 percent and prostate specific antigen PSA fell by 10.4 percent, they reported in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.

HGF and VEGF are produced when tumors spread and some patients showed “significant” reduction levels of more than 30 percent, Cardelli said.

Few side effects were reported and liver function of the patients remained normal.

“It’s still in an early stage. Green tea can keep cancer from growing very fast, but it may not be able to shrink tumors,” Cardelli said in a telephone interview.
