Acupuncture has helped a woman achieve the dream of being a mother.
When she was 43, mother-of-one Josephine McDonnell longed for a second baby to complete her
However, seeing the heartache and financial turmoil that IVF treatment had caused some of her close friends, Josephine decided this route wasn’t an option.
After she turned to acupuncture though, the former solicitor became pregnant with her second child Róisín in just three months – achieving her goal without breaking the bank or her heart.
At least 3,000 years old, Chinese healing method acupuncture is used to treat everything from obesity and depression to helping people quit smoking or conceive.
“Many years ago my sister gave me vouchers for acupuncture sessions as a present,” says Josephine (44), who is from Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin .

It has long been suspected that stressed out women are less likely to become pregnant but using yoga and acupuncture can less the stress and increase the chance of conceiving.
It’s long been suspected that stress can affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant.
Now, for the first time, British scientists have found concrete evidence that stressed-out women have a harder time conceiving.
Researchers took saliva samples from more than 400 fertile women. They measured levels of alpha-amylase, a compound produced by the salivary gland when people experience stress.
Women with high levels of alpha amylase were found to be about 12 percent less likely to get pregnant.
“What we ended up finding is one bio marker in particular – alpha amylase – significantly reduced the probability of conception everyday during the fertile window while women were trying to get pregnant,” said the National Institutes of Health’s Germaine Louis. “The bottom line is there are some things you can do to maximize your chances if you are at all concerned, or even if you’re not, about trying to get pregnant as soon as possible.”

Moms in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan engage in confinement after child birth; they believe this helps the mind and body to come to regain balance after pregnancy.
When Noelle Leung learned she was pregnant, the first person she called was her doctor. The second was a confinement lady.
So-called confinement ladies are highly sought after in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia as experts who can guide women through what’s believed to be a critical month after birth.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, the month after giving birth is when new mothers are especially vulnerable to health problems, so they’re not supposed to go outside, take a bath, brush their teeth or do anything else that could allow “bad wind” into their bodies.

Many women can attest that acupuncture can help you achieve healthy pregnancy. This article describe one woman’s experience with this ancient therapy.
So, it’s probably no surprise that one of my 2010 New Year’s resolutions was to try acupuncture. I figured it could only help reduce stress, increase blood flow and help me figure out WHEN I actually ovulate – something I’ve never really been able to do.
This is the first time we have “actively” tried to get pregnant. I really never expected that it would happen right away! Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but let me tell you what happened…
I went to see licensed acupuncturist, Carolyn Huffman/Huffman Wellness in South Tampa back in January. She specializes in fertility.
