Here are some remedies that can help you end the nagging pain of migraine.

Roughly 30 million Americans get migraines, three times more women than men — but sufferers can find relief. Your doctor may prescribe medications to lessen the severity or frequency of headaches; lifestyle changes, such as a consistent sleep schedule and healthy weight, also can help. Even alternative treatments may work: Research shows acupuncture may be effective.

Here are some other research-backed remedies, but talk to your doctor first.

Acupuncture is shown to be effective in easing migraine.

A recent study has highlighted that the traditional Chinese acupuncture is much effective in treating migraines as compared to the “sham” acupuncture used by the physicians using needles.

Traditional Chinese acupuncture often relieves patients from the agony of pain as compared to the scientific version of acupuncture. During the study, participants of the study were provide with three kinds of traditional Chinese acupuncture, and it was found that the participants didn’t report of migraine pain for at least four weeks.

Migraine can be a debilitating illness, fortunately, there are many treatments that can make migraine sufferers feel better.

Migraine headaches are one of the most common pain syndromes that send a person to the doctor. More than 28 million people suffer from migraine headaches, which are characterized by rapid onset of throbbing pain, usually on one side and often associated with nausea or vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. Women are more likely than men to have migraines, at a ratio of 3:1.

For many migraine patients, their headaches cause them significant distress and result in missed days from work or school.

To effectively manage migraines, it is important to address lifestyle factors that may be contributing to headaches — factors such as stress, diet, sleep patterns and exercise. It is also important to look for other underlying causes.

Some doctors are finding acupuncture can help kids in reducing pain, nausea, migraine and anxiety.

A growing number of American children are getting acupuncture, which is increasingly offered by doctors as a sideline to their traditional practices, surveys and studies say.

The National Health Interview Survey, which in 2007 asked about acupuncture use, reported that about 150,000 children had received the treatment in the previous year for conditions such as pain, nausea, migraine and anxiety.

Recent studies have suggested that Chinese medicine can help alleviate migraines.

I first became aware of how effective Chinese medicine can be in treating migraine headaches in 1978. At that time I was living in Cambridge, England where I was teaching yoga. One of my students, Anna, had started classes because she was suffering from chronic back pain, insomnia, fatigue and migraine headaches. Within a few weeks of starting her classes Anna’s most of Anna’s complaints had eased, but what had not changed were her migraines. They persisted with devastating regularity.

At that time there were very few acupuncturists in England, but fortunately one lived nearby and Anna decided to go and see him. Within a few weeks of treatment Anna’s migraines were greatly reduced and after further treatment they ceased altogether. I was very impressed by this radical improvement in Anna’s health and went to see her practitioner. At that first meeting I was immediately fascinated by what I learnt about Chinese medicine. One of the things that I found most compelling about this tradition of medicine was the emphasis on treating the primary cause of an illness. I began reading about the different traditions of acupuncture and within a couple of years I had begun my own training.
