Insomnia can be very detrimental to one’s health and many have found relief in acupuncture at a recent UPMC study.

Insomnia can lead sufferers to try everything from pharmaceuticals to a warm glass of milk to soothe their restless nights, but a UPMC study is testing a centuries-old technique in hopes of finally providing some sweet dreams.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, has been using acupuncture as a remedy for insomnia.

“In the Chinese medicine literature, acupuncture is reported to ‘cure’ insomnia,” said Dr. Ronald Glick, of UPMC’s Center for Integrative Management.

Patient Anna Squilla told WTAE Channel 4 Action News anchor Sally Wiggin that the treatment has done nothing but help.

Chinese medicine can help you get a good night’s sleep.

Insomnia, whether for a prolonged time or a short duration is a dreaded cycle that can drive us to the brink of insanity. There nothing worse than being so tired all day long that we just can’t think straight. Then, when you finally hit the pillow and sleep only a few hours, you wake up and can’t get back to sleep. People cope in different ways with this pattern. Some start there day at 4 AM because “there is just no sense in staying in bed.” Other’s rely on prescription drugs. Regardless of how you decide to cope with the lack of sleep here’s a quick look at insomnia from the Chinese medicine perceptive. This little insight or different perspective, may help you change whatever is going on in your life that’s affecting your sleep patterns.

Insomnia due to panic, anger and excessive worry will gradually lead to chronic insomnia. This pattern is especially worrisome because of it’s chronic, (ongoing) nature. Emotions that are buried and not addressed during the daytime hours may in a sense, haunt us at night. These emotions cause a deficiency of heart qi and transform and flare up disturbing the mind at night. Dealing with emotional problems during waking hours will prevent this type of insomnia.

If you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep, consider trying acupuncture. In a recently published review, researchers sized up 46 studies (including a total of 3,811 patients) that examined the use of acupuncture in treatment of insomnia. Results revealed that acupuncture was superior to sleeping pills regarding the number of patients whose total sleep time increased by more than three hours. The researchers also found that using acupuncture in combination with herbal remedies was more effective than using herbs alone to improve sleep.
