According to the ancient Chinese, ginseng is the “King of the herbs.” It was discovered several thousand years ago in the mountains of northern China. Ginseng is called renshen in Chinese; rhen ren means “man” and shen refers to a wide variety of medicinal roots. Therefore, renshen is basically a medicinal root that is shaped like a man. Ginseng is grown in the cool, moist regions of the temperate zone in Northern China, Korea and the Midwest section of the United States. Ordinarily, it takes five to seven years for ginseng to grow to full size and to be ready for harvest. Because of the scarcity of ginseng around the world and the increasing demand for it, the price of ginseng has increased steadily.

ginseng plant

There is a folk tale regarding ginseng in China and it goes something like this…

There was an old hunter who had two sons who had just started learning how to hunt from their father. The father advised them not to go hunting on their own until the winter was over, but the sons ignored their father’s advice and went hunting anyway.

Their father was right. The two brothers had not learned the skills to be good hunters and a few days into their journey, there were stuck in a snow storm with very little food. In desperation, they searched everywhere for something to eat.

They finally spotted a plant that looked different from the others. The brothers noticed that the roots looked like a man standing up. They began to eat the roots, which were sweet and a little bitter but very juicy. They continued eating the roots for the next few days. Around this time, they began to find themselves very energetic despite of not having any food for almost a week. The roots of this plant carried them through the winter and they headed home once the bad weather was gone.

The unexpected return of the two brothers shocked the entire village. Of course, the old hunter was relieved and surprised that his sons were still alive. The father was curious to find out how they survived the winter storm.

“What did you do to make it through the storm?” the father asked.

“We ate the roots of a plant.” Explained the brothers.

“What is the name of the plant?”asked the father.

“We don’t know the name of the plant, but the roots looks like a man.” One brother said.

“Oh, It must be the man’s plant.” Said the father.
